WEDNESDAY JUL 29, 2009 - Lux Interior, co-founder of The Cramps, passed away

We are sad to relate that the finest frontman in the long history of punk rock has left us. Lux Interior, lead singer and co-founder of The Cramps, passed away on February 4th, as reported by the band's publicist.

Charismatic and gifted with boundless energy, the former Erick Purkhiser started the group with guitarist (and Mrs. Interior) Poison Ivy in the early '70s, festering from a combined love of rockabilly, trash culture and b-grade horror movies. Relocating to New York before settling on their first notable lineup, consisting of drummer Nick Knox, guitarist Bryan Gregory and, unlike every other rock band, no bass player, The Cramps made built their legacy on thump-crash beats and the stunning buzz of Gregory against the brittle twang of Ivy's Gretsch guitar. From that roux, Lux's lurching and lascivious hoots and growls set the tone perfectly. As quoted in an early press release "The Cramps won't pummel and you won't pogo. They'll ooze, you'll throb."

The PRC family extends their warmest condolences to Ivy in this tremendously sad and difficult time.
